We live in New Zealand and have just returned from Italy, with 5 days in Monterosso a highlight! We would absolutely recommend the hotel La Villa Degli Argentieri, where we spent the five nights. Its on the beach front a couple of minutes walk from the railway station, and although it overlooks a small car park between it and the sea, it was screened by pine trees and not obtrusive. We had a room on the first floor with a balcony, a lovely view up the Cinque Terre Coast! The hotel is immaculate and beautifully presented - a bit quirky with marine themed decor but fun. The room was very large, the bathroom and fittings excellent, the dining room and terrace lovely and the buffet breakfast the best European style we have come across anywhere. The management (Signora Argentiera) and staff are friendly and helpful and we couldn't fault it. And the location is superb! We gave it 10/10!

Thank you so much...we had see the Argentieri ans shall check it out once again. I see most of the cafés were located in the more southern area of Monterosso village. Any suggestions there? Did you hike down thru the villages? Any other advice for the area.

We found the best selection of cafés and other food places in the main part of the village. its about 10 minutes walk through the tunnel to the main piazza. We had five nights and mostly picked one of the "trattoria" or "osteria" which are a bit cheaper than the "ristorante" and we had some excellent meals! The local seafood is great and the portions are generous. We always ordered the house wine and found it fine. If you want cheap and cheerful there are a couple of freindly pizzeria too.

Yes we hiked the number 2 "blue" trail between Corniglia and Vernazza and then from Monterosso to Vernazza another day. Unfortunately the rest of the trail is still closed for repairs. It is absolutely beautiful and well worth the effort - there are a lot of long steep climbs. You buy rail/trail tickets at the railway station either for one or two days. But you save only one euro on the two day deal. We used the trains to see all the villages and spent one full day by getting the train to Riomaggiore, stopped off, then back to Manarola for a wander round, then to Cornigla where we could start walking to Vernazza. There are other lovely trails too - try number 10 from Monterosso to the old sanctuary and semaphore station. A bit of a haul for an hour - but what a view! Wouldn't bother to visit La Spezia, there is not much to see and its a bit scruffy at first sight though has a nice modern harbour front development. Hope that helps, we loved the whole experience!

Great advice! We have read and researched some on the area. I could follow your suggestions perfectly. How did they post which trails were open or closed? Your hiking itinerary sounds similar to our thoughts. Thanks again.

Best way to get an update is to ask when you buy your trail tickets. I understand there is little prospect that the closed portion (from Riomaggiore) will open soon, as there are major repairs under way. So its really just a question of checking if weather conditions - like high seas - have effected a closure. Wouldn't depend on the web sites which we found to be not up to date. Have fun!
