Cinque Terre to Rome???

We're staying in Monterosso for a couple of days at the end of Sept/07 and then off to Rome. What is the best way to get there? Should we leave from Monterosso or La Spezia? Do we need to make reservations?

Thanks!

Hi HK,

If you're just going to Rome to get on a plane, then I'd suggest hiring a car, driving yourself and dropping it off at the airport (without touching Rome central), but if you're staying in Rome, you probably don't want to drive any where near the central part of Rome because a) they drive a little differently and b) it's quite easy to get lost, stuck in traffic and terribly frustrated! In which case, you either hire a driver (if there's a group of you, this is a nice option as they can just drop you off at the hotel).

If you're only 2 people and want to save the money, you could get the train. You can check the timetable here: http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/

it's over 4 hours from La Spezie. When you pull up the timetable, Stazione di Cambio shows where you have to change trains and how many times. Categoria treno is important for the sort of ticket you need to buy - there are different pricing scales. If you have a lot of heavy luggage, I'd recommend getting a driver.

Hope this helps,

Julia

Hello heav

Don't worry the best way is the intercity train.

from La Spezia you arrive in Roma in 4 hour

If you catch intercity Plus you need reservation for the place obbligatory that you buy in Monterosso station a day before leaving

Anyway can you look at www.trenitalia.com

Train every time unless your nerves are accustomed to driving on Italian roads.

If you take the train, it will have to be from La Spezia. An intercity takes about 4 1/2 to 5 hours of train time. it is a good idea to make reservations, since the train cars can get packed, and you don't want to get settled in your seat only to have to get up and move with all your luggage 30 minutes later. for price, you can expect 33 euros/ person, again, an intercity train)
