Advice on how best to see Cinque Terre, from Florence

We are a party of 4, one 58, rest in the 60's. We are all quite fit, but not fit enough to walk from village to village. We plan to go by train from one village to the next, getting down at each village, seeing the place, then going on to the next one. We will be based in Florence. Can we do this as a day trip from Florence? If we HAVE to stay overnight closer to Cinque Terre to do justice to the place, where do you recommend we stay overnight? La Spezia? Levanto? or in one of the Cinque Terre villages themselves? If so, which one would you recommend? Any advice would be most welcome! By the way, we will be in Florence towards the end of September, for three or four days.

Thanking you in anticipation, and with regards

Just to answer one question, you can get to CT and back in one day by train, but it will be a very long day.

Look at Trenitalia.com - mostly regional trains - for schedules. There are also tours by bus that will do it.

I would not go if the weather is poor, like raining, because it will be a dismal place.

If you have the time I sugggest you stay overnight in one of the villages since on a day trip from Florence travelling time is really out of proportion and you will get a much better feeling of the character of the places once the day trippers have departed. Would be best if you could fit the night in either on your way of after you have visited Florence. Monterosso is the largest of the villages and would probably offer the most selection of accommodation for your party. The ferry trip around the villages and to Portovenere is certainly worth doing.

I am not sure about how much time it wil take from Florence to CT but I have travelled from Genova to CT and returned in single day and travelled from village to village by train only. As you are coming from opposite direction so you need to check the train schedule and then shoul dplan accordingly so that you may not waste time by waiting at station. Definitely, you have to take into account the factor how soon you can see that village. If you have some plan to rest at any of beach then Monterosso (the last village) for you will be best (otherwise lavanga is the best beach though it is not included in CT)
