Cinque Terre to Switzerland

Can anyone suggest an itenerary that includes a couple of days in Cinque Terre, and perhaps a few days in either northern Italy or Switzerland. We plan on a 12 day trip including 2 days of flying to and from the US. We don't wish to drive; we'd take a bus or train or even a driver to get us from one destination to another We;ve seen Lake Como, but we wouldn't mind stopping there as well.. Also which airport would you suggest to fly to and from the trip? Thank you in advance.

If you plan to go to the Cinque Terre you can fly in Milano or in Genova.

If you're in Milano go to www.trenitalia.com to plan your travel from Milano Centrale to Manarola. Milano to Manarola takes 3 or 4 hours, british flag upper on the right corner. Remember to select the hour. You probably'd like to stay a few days in Cinque terre to hike. I suggest you to come in September to enjoy the seaside.

There are many direct trains from Milan to Monterosso in around three hours. You normally have to change trains for the other four Cinque Terre villages. Advance purchase saves money, and online tickets are a print-at-home pdf.

There are direct trains from Milan to many places in Switzerland - e.g. Montreux, Lausanne, Geneva, Bern, Lugano, Zurich, Lucerne (only one a day, otherwise change at Arth-Goldau). For other places, a change of train is needed, e.g. Zermatt (change at Brig), Interlaken (change at Spiez).

www.trenitalia.com will show you the times and fares of trains from Milano Centrale to places served by direct trains. For trains within Switzerland, use www.sbb.ch - so to go to Interlaken use the Trenitalia site to Spiez, and the sbb site from thereon.

sbb will also show times from Milan, but tickets bought on that site must be collected in Switzerland, or couriered to the USA at considerable expense. Tickets bought on Trenitalia for journeys to Switzerland are collected from a ticket machine in Milano Centrale using a code supplied by email.
