Need Advice on Visiting Cinque Terre

My wife and I will be taking a cruise from Venice to Rome. As our return flight is in/out of Venice, we were thinking of visiting Cinque Terre after the cruise. We were wondering if it would make better sense to rent a car or take a train. I suspect that trains would be the favoured option, however lugging around a few suitcases would be a nuisance. Your advice would be appreciated.

It is doubtful which is the better for this journey.

A train from Venice to La Spezia will take around 5 hours, with 2 changes of train. The full price would be € 67 per person, but with advance purchase it might be as little as €40.

A car journey would take about as long and would cost €30.60 in tolls and about €42 in fuel, plus rental.

You could make Florence a mid point for both connections (Rome/CT and CT/Venice) and leave your extra bags there before continuing to the CT destination and then pick them up on your way to Venice. The Rome/Florence/Ct trip is fairly straightforward but going back through Florence is not the most direct way to Venice.

I recommend the train. We visited Rome, then Cinque Terre, then Venice, and did all that by train. Getting the luggage on and off the train wasn't a big deal. Once you are in the Cinque Terre, you wouldn't need a car, so I think it would be a waste. Just beware there may be a lot of steps to your room once you have arrived!
