Best Way to Cinque Terre? From Milan or Florence?

We will be returning for another Italian Vacation in May and would like to go to Cinque Terre, Tuscany and end in Rome before flying back to California. Would it be best to fly in to Milan or Florence to start our vacation? Looking at all the different connecting trains have been quite confusing. Originally we were going to fly into Milan and spend the first nite there and get the train to CT for 1 ot 2 nights, head to Tuscany for 1 -2 nights and spend the last 4 nights in Rome to see what we missed on our trip last year to Rome/Florence and Venice.

Any suggestions??? Thanks in advance for any information!

Journeys from Florence Airport and from Milan's Malpensa Airport to the Cinque Terre take around the same time. To Monterosso it's certainly easier from Milan, as there will only be one transfer from the airport (at Milano Centrale off the airport train onto a direct train to Monterosso). From Florence it's at least two transfers (including an airport bus) and sometimes three.

Pisa and Genoa airports are nearer the Cinque Terre than either Florence or Milan. However depending on your location (it's a good idea to add this to your Tripadvisor personal details) it is possible that to reach these airports would require an additional flight, which would remove any advantage.

At Malpensa airport, which is the Milan airport mainly used by Americans, the airport train station is located at the airport.

While fares from Florence are cheaper, the difference is paltry compared to the cost of a transatlantic flight given the greater ease of travel from Miian.

The table provided in Reply 2 is misleading - it is not possible to reach Monterosso from Florence in two hours - typical times are 2.5 to 3 hours, and with changes.

If you check on the trenitalia website to Monterosso rather than to la Spezia, you get the true journey times which allow for the time necessary to change trains at la Spezia. it is pointless to look at times to la Spezia when you really want train times to Monterosso.

Certainly choose the flight first - you will find flights to Florence from the USA are usually more expensive than flights to Milan and also usually slower, as they either have an additional leg or the final leg is on a low frequency route.

We. too, want to see Cinque Terre and can use your help. We will be staying 2 nights in Milan, then want to go to Lake Como for a few nights, then Cinque Terre and then back to MIlan for the last night since we will be flying out the next morning. Is this too ambitious? do we need a car? any recommendations would be extremely helpful. We arrive late July and leave August3. (8 nights). Never been in this area and want best itinerary for 4 of us..
