Venice to 5T via Train on 28 June

What is the best route?

Depart Venice 8:30 a.m. - ish?

Arrive Milan?

Do we switch trains and if so, is it tricky?

Milan to La Spezia?

1) Is there a better way to go?

2) Do we need to know anything specific regarding switching trains in Milan?

3) How many hours might it take from Venice to La Spezia?

Thanks so much.

Sorry to contradict mino but there is no direct train from Venice to Cinque Terre. You will have to change in Milano Centrale. If you want to leave Venice at around 8.00 there's a train at 8.34 that arrives in Milano Centrale at 11.05 and from Milano another train at 12.10 that arrives in Monterosso at 15.02 You will find other options in www.trenitalia.it

We travelled Venice to Manarola on 29 Apr 06. We travelled via Florence. Our trip- Venice Santa Lucia to Venice Mestre 10 minute ride. Buy ticket in vending machine in train station lobby- choose English- the screen will walk you through the process- costs 1 E -validate ticket in yellow boxes- jump on any train- they all stop at Mestre. A word of warning. We met a couple standing on the Mestre platform. They did not know there are two Venice stations and they just got on the train at Santa Lucia with their internet ticket for Florence. The porter fined them 25E plus the cost of the 1E ticket. At mestre, look at the departure board for your next train's track number. Everything is listed by time, so look at he board for your trains departure time, and the track will be listed on bold print. Validate your ticket. Train #2- Eurostar Mestre to Florence (Firenze) depart 0844hrs, arrived 1121. In Florence . Next, at Florence look at their departure board and find the next track number. Validate your ticket. Train #3 Regionale Firenze to La Spezia Centrale 1157, arrived 1430hrs. Piece of cake. Remember, one always uses the underground passageways to go from one track to another. The station public address system will tell you every few minutes that it is forbidden to cross the tracks. We saw a lot of fines issued to those who did not validate their tickets. Last piece of advice, after you pack your suitcase, carry it up and down your stairs, run down your driveway, come back in and climb another flight of stairs. Winded? You might want to lighten up. Remember you are doing all this schlepping with 100 other people also trying to climb the stairs, stop and mob their brows, dogs, kids, blind people, and assorted others. Lynclarke

Thank you all.

We struggled for hours to sort out Trenitalia website, and finally booked tkts through RailEurope. That was very simple.

We chose our route based on:

1) shortest time

2) fewest train switches

So, we're trying the St. Lucia to Milano; Milano to Monterosso.

Although it gets us to 5T later in the day than we'd like, we do have 3 nights, so hopefully it'll be fine.

We'll see!

Thanks again.
