One day visit

My wife and I (both in our 50's but in very good health) will be staying in Santa Margherita for 3 nights. We are planning on getting an early start one day and explore the cinque terre area. Can someone please suggest an itinerary for the day. Where to start, which trails, should we do a combination or hiking and train/ferry,? We would like to also have enough time to walk around the towns. Thanks

How will you get to the Cinque Terre? Drive? Rail? Boat?

How vigorous do you want the hike to be?

Definitely combine hiking with the ferry. You will have the experience of both hiking and boating the coast. The view by boast is especially beautiful. The views from sea give the towns a different perspective.

The hikes are easiest from east to west with Vernazza to Monterosso being the most difficult. The easiest option would be hiking from Riomaggiore to Manarola, stopping for lunch in Manarola, and boating back to Riomaggiore.

Beginning in Monterosso and hiking to Vernazza, having lunch in Vernazza, and returning to Monterosso by boat would be convenient if you are railing back towards Santa Margherita, because Monterosso has better rail connections.

A great hike is to start from riomaggiore and go through each of the cinque terre. the trails get progressivly harder (the first the via dell'amore is paved) and it takes a total of about 5 hours to do the whole thing with out stopping. It is nice to do each leg of the trail and stop to have a coffee, some water, lunch, something a little different in each of the towns. The trail from Monterosso going north to levanto is also very nice, but much longer.
