Lake Bled to Italy

Need to get from Lake Bled, Slovenia to Lucca Italy. Thinking of going to Trieste, staying overnight then travelling to Lucca. Does anyone know if it would be easier to go Lake Bled to Venice, stay overnight, then Venice to Lucca? We will be travelling by train or bus, whichever is the quickest and easiest. We are travelling from Lake Bled on 27 December and need to be in Lucca on 28 December. Thanks in advance for any advice or help.

It can be done pretty quickly. First things first to make it easy is you have to get to Jesenice (Slovenia)

From Jesenice there are some direct train services to Villach. Villach is only 36km away.

From Villach the Austrian National rail www.oebb.at run 5 direct coach services daily to Venice starting at 04:45 - journey only takes ~ 3h40

Purely as an example (as December is far too far ahead)

Depart Jesenice 10:09

Arrive Villach 10:49

walk to Bus departure point

Depart Villach 10:56

Arrive Venice Piazzale Roma 14:25

Similar service departing Jesenice at 12:28 but have a longer wait in Villach.

There are longer alternative services via Ljubljana

For the bus service from Villach to Venice seat booking is compulsory. You can book this leg online with www.oebb.at

Not sure how you can book the Jesenice leg. You could try ringing www.oebb.at for info and/or put a post in the Slovenia/Lake Bled forum

www.oebb.at will show the train solutions from Jesenice.

You could pre-book the Villach-Venice leg and just buy your ticket locally - or if you wish take a local taxi

What about the overnight train to save time and money? The nearest train station to Bled is Lesce-Bled where you can get a train to Villach then o to Vienna, where there are multiple train services through Italy day and night. Recently did it in reverse overnight from Poland to Lesce Bled through Vienna and it was fun - almost like camping again and it was a hoot (literally) looking out the open train window at night at the exciting coutrside whizzing by.

Take a look at a map before you think of going via Vienna. And there are no daytime trains from Vienna to Italy.

There are direct trains from Lesce Bled to Klagenfurt and Villach, or you can pick up these trains at Jesenice if travelling the slower route from the local line which serves Bled itself.

Most of the buses from Villach to Venice actually start at Klagenfurt, so you can get on the bus there if an extra change would be necessary to reach Villach by train.

As far as I know, no reservation is required on trains from Lesce Bled to Klagenfurt and Villach so you can probably just buy your tickets at a train station in Slovenia. But you must book online for the bus from Klagenfurt or Villach to Venice.

Thanks for your help. Our plans are now in place, and need to get from Bled to Trieste on 27 December, then from Trieste to Lucca on 28 December - so any help with this route by train/bus would be appreciated. Not interested in overnight travel, I'm 65 and travelling with 11 year old granddaughter.

So you've chosen the difficult route, rather than going via Austria to Venice.

Trieste-Lucca is OK. See http://www.fsitaliane.it/homepage_en.html - at least one change and almost always two are required, and it takes around six or seven hours.

For Bled or (better) Lesce Bled to Ljubljana see http://www.slo-zeleznice.si/en/

For Ljubljana-Trieste, in theory you can go direct by bus. See the bus operators on here www.slovenia.info/en/By-bus.htm… - but last time I looked at these I found they left too early to make a connection from Bled. There are other routes involving a combination of train and bus or train, bus and tram. Use the search function to find information about these, or post a new question.

And note that all train times for 28 December will not be available on http://www.fsitaliane.it/homepage_en.html until November or even early December, so use a current date for planning.
