How many days Rome and Florence?

How many days do you think would be sufficient in Rome and Florence? We are planning for a trip in May. We aren't the type of people that need to see absolutely everything in a rush, but would rather see less but at a good pace and enjoy the ambiance. We probably want to see some museums but don't want to be inside most of the day, enjoy seeing ruins, enjoy walking and discovering charming cities and love excellent food including wine, cheese and gelato! Right now we have time allotted for either 4.5 days in Rome and 2.5 days in Florence or 3.5 days in Rome and 3.5 days in Florence. Thank you.

Very difficult to say, there is a lot to see in both cities. Rome has more than most cities, whilst Florence has art and culture everywhere! Perhaps a little longer in Rome, as there is the Vatican, St Peters as well as the great Roman sites to enjoy. I reckon 4 days in Rome and 3 in Florence would enable you to see the major sites, but you will probably want to return as these are unique world-famous cities that are full of interest.Make sure you take comfortable shoes, as these places are best experienced on foot.

We were in Rome for 8 nights last October and it was more than enough time...i think 5 days will do...in Florence, we were there for 5 nights, and it was just enough time as well. Try to book your tours and museum tickets ahead of time so you don't waste any lining up, and you can plan your itinerary better:) Try going through site and make a list of all the places and things that interest you...Good luck and have fun:) PS Try the Hotel Beacci Tornabuoni in Florence, ask for room #4 near the entrace, you will not be disappointed...breakfast is great too:)Location is excellent!

ski_girl, we just came back from visiting Rome, florence, Pisa, etc. I highly recommend that you spend at least 3 days at each location inorder to enjoy the ambiance, relax and at the same time enjoy the sites. We stayed 2 nights in florence (felt rushed) and 3 nights outside of Rome (gorgeous Palestrina at Anne's Place)..
