I'm assuming you're talking about the new City tax. If that's the case it started Jan 1st, and its 2 euro per person per night.

from my hotel confirmation

"Rome City Tourist Tax

=====================

from 1 of January 2011 a Rome City Tourist Tax will be applied to all guests – this tax costs 2 Euro per person per night and must be paid upon departure."

Hi,

Actually the amount of tax paid depends on the star rating of the establishment you are staying in -

Starting from next January 1st 2011, ALL travellers staying in any hotel of Rome must pay the following fees:

- € 3.00 PER PERSON PER NIGHT for stays in 5 Star Dlx, 5 Star and 4 Star hotels

- € 2.00 PER PERSON PER NIGHT for stays in 3 Star, 2 Star, 1 Star hotels.

All the above amounts will be calculated for maximum 10 night stay (it means that in case a traveller stays in Rome for 11,12 or more nights they will pay the fee for max 10 nights).

This fee is COMPULSORY, and must be paid DIRECTLY in hotel upon arrival

Quite little!

Although - for up to 10 nights - it's per person, per night.

To a family of 4, all paying, in a B&B, that's potentially 80 Euro...

Can they add the tax to the credit card bill when you check out?

I saw contradicting reports about the age - in one article it was said children under the age of 2 are exempt, another one says 10 years.

It is only 1 euro per person in camp sites, max 5 days payable. None in hostels.
