Vatican Attire

What is the appropriate attire for women to wear to The Vatican. I understand that shoulders must be covered and shorts are not permitted. Can women wear capris or must one wear a skirt or dress? Also, what about head covering? Does a baseball cap work? Do they provide head coverings?

To get into the Vatican Museums, shoulders must be covered (a wrap or large scarf will do); Capri pants are fine, just as long as your knees are also covered. No need to cover your head. In fact, on the day we were there, once past the entrance they did not seem too bothered about ladies covering their shoulders - we saw plenty walking around in strappy tops. Just make sure that your shoulders and knees are covered when you enter the museums, and you will be fine.

TrishP is correct on her comments.

On your other question, there is no need for head covering.

Hi joeyb56 !

Just cover down to knees, and you can bring a large square/scarf of silk to cover shoulders. That means you're not limited to wearing a dress with sleeves. So long as your arms are covered about level with half sleeves, your back and shoulders are covered, and your bosom isn't visible ! No head coverings required for women. They used to have to cover their heads until about 1960 then it was abolished. But men should remove caps/hats inside church as mark of respect.

A silk scarf is lightweight, doesn't make you feel hot and sweaty as it's a breathable natural fabric, and will fold up tiny and pop in a handbag or pocket.

Enjoy your trip !
