transportation from the cruise port to Rome

Is there a convenient way to get from the cruise port to Rome? I think the cruise line charges ~ $85 to see Rome on your own meaning they transport you there and take you back to the ship. Is there another safe way to and from the ship that is less expensive?

Is it safe to take a taxi? And how much would that cost?

there would be 6 of us sharing a cab. Thank you.

the cheapest way is to take the train, we did this from Rome to port last year after spending three days pre-cruise. the best thing for you to do is to go to cruisecritic.com a sister site to tripadvisor. Register and go on the boards. Boards you should really look at would be the one for your cruiseline---and then look at the rollcalls for you cruise to see if others are putting together private tours and then the Eruope/Med board for more tips.

See you over on cruisecritic!!

Yea, the train from Civitavecchia to Rome Terminal railway station is the alternative, but check the timetables carefully. Then you have to walk from the ship to the Civitavecchia train station, or take a cab.

I'd consider taking the cruise line up on the $85 roundtrip transport offer. Six in a taxi will be a bit of a squeeze unless you get a van-type taxi. Is the $85 per person? The distinct advantage of using the cruise line offering is this: You are assured that you'll get back to the ship before departure! This can, in Rome traffic be a considerable worry. If you do choose the train be sure you have a CURRENT schedule and that you've check to be absolutely certain that there is not a strike that day.

If you are interested in taking the train, this information is quite helpful:

For 9 euros pp you can take the train to Rome and back and use buses/subways in Rome.

I highly recommend that you contact Stefano of Rome Cabs, romecabs@yahoo.com. His web site is www.romecabs.com. He has vans which can transport several people & his service cannot be beat. This is not a taxi company but a private transport service. With 6 people sharing costs the price should be quite reasonable. Check out the many recommendations that Stefano gets here on Trip Advisor.
