Does anyone know if we can buy throw away phones in Italy?

We have AT&T. You can add international calling for $5/month, with text messages costing 25 cents/message, and talking at .99 cents/minute worldwide. You just use your own cell phone. Then at the end of the month you just call back and cancel the service. Last month we called & texted home from Greece, Italy, and a cruise ship with no problems.

I have Verizon and to get international service I have to rent a phone and pay $3.99 per day. I decided to take someone's recommendation and buy a phone from www.mobal.com. They sell you the phone and you pay only when you use it for the airtime you use. Let's hope it works.

If you don't want to add the international plan for $5.99 a month, then you can just have your phone activated for international service. With AT&T, it's $1.25 per minute and 50 cents per text message (both to send and receive.) As we only plan on needing our phone in the event of an emergency or to quickly tell family that we've made it, etc. we decided to not do the international calling plan, as the savings weren't that great.

You can buy a phone from TIM for 39 euro complete with SIM and 5 euro talk time. More talk time can be added at most tabaci. Cost will be about .50 euro to U.S. and .10 euro in Italy, nothing to recieve.

Since phones sold in italy are all unlocked, you can use the phone for any future European/Asian/South American/Australian trip. You would only need to buy a new SIM card.
