One day in Rome--best places to visit to get a feel for the...

I will be going to Italy for the first time in September. First week in Tuscany, 5 days in Amalfi, 1.5 days in Rome. Is one day in Rome enough to get a feel for the City? Is it better to do a tour, if so, which one? Tour company recomendations? It will be my last stop before my trip home. Any hotel recomendations? I will be staying by myself on that portion of the trip. Thanks!!

Go to the area around the Pantheon, Piazza Navonna, and Trevi Fountain first. There are endless options for dining, shopping and general sightseeing. If you have time, I would also recommend the Colosseum and the Forum area, and/or the Spanish Steps area.

Piazza Navonna and the Pantheon are NOT to be missed and are within minutes of one another. Piazza Navone is wonderful by night and is a great place to watch the world go by. You could also easily see the Forum on the same day. I cannot imagine going to Rome and missing the Forum or the Pantheon.
