It is a bit of a walk from the Termini to the Trevi Fountain. It would be a good 20 minutes to half an hour so maybe plan this for the next day. The Spanish steps and the Trevi fountain are close enough to eachother but a good walk from the Termini. It could be a good idea to book into your hotel and have a wander around your local surroundings. The restaurants and cafe's are open till late as Romans make the most of the tourist trade. This way you could find something to eat a little later and then get into the rythme of the change in time zone.

That's a good question, it's hard when looking at maps to get a real idea of scale/distance.

So to give us all an idea to judge on - how long would it take to walk from say Trevi Fountain to Colesseum -or is it too far?

As Oscarpebbles mentioned it is a bit of a walk tho very managable depending on how good you feel once at the hotel.

Our hotel was on Via Venezia (off Via Nationale) which is just a couple blocks from the main Termini. We walked to the Colosseum from there, to the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and other places. We took a tour bus ride (especially nice during the evening hours) got off at the Campo Di Fiori stop and walked our way back, passing the Piazza Navona, the Pantheon (piazza wonderful at night) took many a side streets and found our way back to the hotel.

Ancient Rome is very managable by foot, if your up to it.

And if all else fails why not take a cab to the Spanish Steps (from Termini cost us €7 after 9pm) and make the walk back to your hotel.

Take a map, one with all the tiny side streets. On the map the places look farther away than they actually feel when your walking. Many times we found we had passed out ' turn ' street because going by ' sight ' we felt the places were farther than they looked.

Dont be afraid of the back side streets. Many are well lit, usually have other people walking down them and we personally found were rather very safe to travel.

This is an excellent map site to track distances = http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/

Another option, if you decide that you are too tired to do the walk, is to take the metro. There is a stop right by the termini at vittorio emanuel, and another one at the spanish steps (piazza di spagna).

From Termini to Trevi it is just about 3 K and about 4 to Spanish steps. Not knowing exactly where your hotel is located you could add up to an additonal 2 k. You can take the metro from the termini to the Spanish steps area and walk back by way of Trevi, Pantheon and the Colesseum. All great to visit after dark.

Our hotel was by the Trevi and I think it took a good 25-30 minutes to walk from the Termini. It felt really far to me, but then again, we also had luggage with us.

I think it better to take the metro to the Spanish steps as suggested by the previous post since the exit/entrance is right there. Trevi to the coloseum is about 10 min walk.

I think all of Rome is 'walkable' if you have the time and energy. But the best bet is to use the public transportations like the trains and buses. They are awesome, and very convenient.
