Where to stay when visiting Pompeii etc

Going in September to visit Pompeii, Heraculem, Vesuvius.

Looking for somewhere to stay that is close enough to Naples that we can get to there from the airport when we first arrive in the evening, (by taxi?), but not wanting to be based in Naples, is in a nicer area and one from which we can easily visit Pompeii and Vesuvius.

Sorrento, or its smart suburb Sant Agnello would do you. A fun tourist town, lots of cafes, restaurants, busy, noisy too, but most of all it offers easy access by local train to Pompeii and Herculaneum, the second town destroyed in AD 79, and from where you get the bus up to the Volcano. You can catch a train to Sorrento from the Central Station Naples, the line around the bay is named the 'CIRCUMVESUVIANA'. Alternatively there is a coach service outside Naples airport that goes there, takes about an hour, run by a company called CURRERI. Do a search forum to find out more.
