Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius??, take a tour or do it on our own??

Hi,

We will be arriving at napples train station on may 25th, sunday. We are 2 adults and 2 teenage boys. We are thinking of checking into a hotel because next day we are heading to capri. Now can we do Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius (in this order) on our own or take a guided tour(which costs a bomb)?., Need help here. If doing on our own, How do we arrange for a guide?. and then how do head to Mt vesuvius after?. Also places on where to stay in napples for one night?

Thanks in advance.

On what day do you plan on seeing these two sights? If it's May 25th, I'd say neither.

Trains Naples lower basement station to Pompeii Scavi www.eavcampania.it

Bus to Vesuvius departs from outside the excavation

You can join a Pompeii guided group tour for 10 euro pp. There are also guides at Vesuvius.

We did a private tour in Pompeii with a guy named Nello from Balla in Style. He was great. There were four of us in our tour and we enjoyed the tour. He was very knowledgable and it was really nice to be able to stop and ask questions etc... Enjoy your trip.

Our cost was 120 euro plus entry fee for a two hour tour. There were four in our group.

Back to my original posting. A normal day from Naples would be go up Vesuvius in the a.m. when it is still cool (and only if it is clear, otherwise you won't have any views) and then on to Pompeii, in the afternoon. This would be from a normal start, early from a hotel room, around 9:00am. I have no idea what time you arrive in Naples, or how long it will take you to get through passport control and to your hotel. To me it seems that you don't have the time in one day to do this.

You don't need to pay 120 euro plus entry (11 euro) - just get a guide at the ticket office. They take groups of ten and cost only 10 euro per person.

@travels1940. We arrive in naples central station at 8.30a.m. The reason behind not doing vesuvius in the morning is bcoz it may be clear at that time of the day. Thanks, Will do some more research.

@ Kathy, Thanks for the info. The guide at the ticket office which u r suggesting, how long does that tour last?.

By paying more , can u get a guide for longer duration?

Also can u suggest a hotel(safety is the key) near central train station?, Plan is to leave the luggagein the hotel and head back to the same train station to catch the local train to Pompeii Scavi,

Thanks in advance
