Best Home Base for exploring Naples Area

I'm planning a trip for next May and we were thinking of having a base somewhere near Naples and doing day trips to Vesuvius, Pompeii and other places in the area. Where do you think would be a good home base?

Why not base in Naples? If that idea is too scary, then I'd suggest Sorrento.

It depends on what other places you would like to visit in the area, besides Pompei and Vesuvius, as both of these can be reached (fairly) easily from a whole array of places.

It also depends on what you like to do, and how much time your planning to spend at the "Home Base" and how much visiting the surrounding area.

Some choices might be Naples itself, Sorrento, perhaps even Castellammare di Stabia which lies in between the previous two? tripadvisor.com/Tourism-g194718-Castellammar…

Hi! We are currently staying at Hotel Gardenia Sorrento which is amazing. We have just come from Florence by train and before that were in Rome. I would not stay in Naples as my husband had is wallet stolen whilst boarding a train in Naples by Gypsies we have have had no other problems else were in Italy on in Naples also beware and trust no-one as they try to scam you on everything...

When we stayed for 10 days in the Bay of Naples area, we stayed in Sorrento. Pompeii is nearly equidistant from Naples and Sorrento on the Circumvesuviana commuter train. Sorrento is clean and has great restauratns and shopping opportunities (til 9 pm every night).

You could also stay at the Villa dei Misteri Hotel in Pompei, 200 meters from the Circumvesuviana commuter rail station. Principal downside to this location is lack of nightlife and shopping.

To visit the Amalfi Coast, Paestum, Caserta, Pompeii, Capri and Naples itself, you could also base yourself in Salerno. Salerno gives you an urban environment (more so than Sorrento), but much cleaner and less chaotic than Naples itself. There is excellent train service north and south from Salerno, as well as hourly SITA buses to the Amalfi Coast, and ferry boats or hydrofoils from April through October to Amalfi, Positano and Capri (with limited service to Sorrento as well).

We stayed there for 10- days in Feb 2006, but 3 of thiose days we were in Pompeii. after spending time at Pompeii or our hotle room, we used to head for Sorrento for dinner and shopping and then take the Circumvesuviana back to Pompei when shopping in Sorrenotoclsed at 9 pm.
