Here in Naples they've tried to fix that "it's Monday and nothing's open" problem by arranging for the museum and site closing days to be staggered. Not a full list, but some to watch out for...

A few that HAVE stuck to Mondays:

* Baia - museum in the castle, and the archaeological area (Baia, near Pozzuoli)

* Galleria di Palazzo Zevallos di stigliano (Naples)

* Stazione Zoologica (Mergellina)

* Paestum (the museum, not the site) - 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month

...........................................

Many others (in Naples unless indicated) are open then, and close as follows:

- Tuesdays:

* Cappella Sansevero

* Castel Sant'Elmo, and the Museo del Novecento

* Flavian amphitheatre (Pozzuoli)

* MADRE (Museum of Contemporary Art, Donna Regina) and the Museo Diocesano

* National Archaeological Museum

* PAN (Palazzo delle Arti di Napoli)

* Villa Pignatelli, the Museo Diego Aragona Pignatelli Cortes (Mergellina/Chiaia)

* Villa Floridia, for the ceramics collection of the Museo Duca di Martina (Vomero)

* Vanvitelli's Reggia, the Royal Palace (Caserta)

...........................................

- Wednesdays

* Certosa e Museo di San Martino

* Cimitero Storico delle Fontanelle

* Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte

* Palazzo Reale

...........................................

- Saturdays AND Sundays

* National Railway Museum of Pietrarsa (NB also, closes at 13:30)

...........................................

- Sundays

* Biblioteca Nazionale di Napoli

* Castel Nuovo

* Grotta di Seiano e Pausilypon (Posillipo)

...........................................

Others are even odder! For times and prices etc, try the tourist board's magazine - 'Qui Napoli'. A PDF of their most recent edition can usually be had by clicking on the red "download" link here....

But, despite the above, it's wise to telephone - or get your hotel to do so - before making any especially demanding journey!

Just a note to record that there's no longer a printed version of that "Qui Napoli" magazine - although the one available online as a PDF is to continue!

Really useful Peter - I'm bookmarking this for our trip in March... By which time it will probably all have changed!

Hmm... No point in trying to see Baia and the Flavian Amphitheatre in a day then!

Your posts are a very valuable source of information Peter, and I love your website too - great photos! Thank you for all the effort you put in helping people on here!

Any day, bar a Monday or Tuesday, should be OK?

Peter of course - I'm excusing my feeble and confused mind with the fact that it was late and I was tired!!

On a re-read I see that I failed to mention two of the very largest attraction here - but Pompeii and Herculaneum are open daily, except (and even then not always) on a small number of public holidays.

For the official site's details, but in Italian, start here:
