Train from Sorrento to Rome

I know the train from Sorrento to Naples is a local. How do you find a train schedule?

How do I find out a train schedule and how to make a reservation from Naples to Rome?

Thanks

We just did this trip 3 weeks ago. The local trains from Sorrento to Naples run very regularly, I think it's every half hour or so. The train station is right in the centre of town and you can get a scheule there. You buy the tickets at the little News agent/ Tobacco store store that is at the station. For our train trip to Rome from Naples, we took our hotel's recommendation and booked ahead through Avi Travel right on the main street in town. The people were helpful and spoke English well. We took the Euro Star option as it is much faster with no stops. I think it took one and a half hours from Naples to rome and was very comfortable. The regular train is a bit cheaper but takes longer ( 3 hour I think).

Check the Trenitalia website. Not every train is a local. You will also notice there is more than one class of seating, as well as different classes/types of trains, some faster than others, like the Eurostar. Familiarize yourself with the category legends, and then it's pretty easy to follow. It is a lovely ride. However, be wary of suspicious types (such as pickpockets) at both train stations, and gypsies congregating near the station in Rome, sometimes using their children as bait, circling around or annoying you, while someone else picks your pockets or steals your purse. Be cautious, rather than risk not having the most wonderful time of your life.

If your times are flexible, you can wait until your arrive in Italy, or ask the hotel to make the reservations. If you are nervous about a particular date and time, then by all means make the reservation ahead of time.

We made ours online, but picked up the tickets in Italy.

Depending upon your schedule for things to see and do in Sorrento, I would very much recommend ,as an alternative, taking the Marozzi Bus from Sorrento to Rome, rather than going through Naples. We've done it both ways, the bus being FAR better, we thought. If you are close to Piazza Tasso, walk to the bus, even though it is in the wee hours. We did (mom and teen daughter). Sorrento is a pretty safe area.

The bus leaves Sorrento very early in the morning (around 6:00 AM) from Piazza Tasso in the Historic Center of town. You can purchase tickets at AVI Travel on the Via Corso. Just don't wait until the last minute, though, since this is a very popular alternative, and there is only one bus a day to Rome. The bus is very comfortable, airconditioned, and has a huge compartment for luggage. The bus arrives at the Tiburtina Station in Rome.

Dear ShirleyA,

The train from Napoli Piazza Garibaldi within Napoli Centrale FS Train Station is a Circumvesuviana train and not one listed on the Trenitalia www.trenitalia.it web site. You'll need to buy tickets for the Circumvesuviana Train Station from any tobacconist, the newsstands at platform #14 or #28 in Napoli Centrale FS Train Station, or at the newsstand near the entrance to the Circumvesiviana Train Station. The temporary station is located to the left and you can follow the signs for "Circumvesuviana" within Napoli Centrale. They've covered the old signs which led to the original Circumvesuviana Station downstairs which is now being renovated.

Here's a link for the Sorrento-bound Circumvesuviana Trains. When in Sorrento, you'll be taking a Napoli Porta Nolana-bound Circumvesuviana Train. You can choose "Napoli Garibaldi" or "Sorrento" in the pull-down menu in the following link and then choose "Scarica l'Orario Invernale" for the timetable.

Buona Fortuna...
