What do you mean, like seeing Rome? In a day trip? Not a good idea at all - it would take the better part of 3 hours just to get to Rome.

I can't answer about the baby friendly question as I don't stay in Sorrento. From Sorrento though, you could visit the Amalfi Coast, Ischia, Capri - Sorrento should be fine baby-wise - it is not as vertical as, say Positano.

One thing is for sure, Italians themselves are VERY baby-friendly. They'll be tripping all over you to coo over your baby.

You can make a quick visit to Rome, though not adviseable with a baby, as there is so much to see and experience.

The excavations at Pompeii Scavi and Herculeum are reached by train from Sorrento www.vesuviana.it

Note that at the excavations, the pedestrian surfaces are uneven.

As for Sorrento being "Baby friendly" , as mentioned your baby will get so much lovey dovey attention ! :)

It's true the Italians are very family orientated and certainly all Restaurants, pavement cafes etc. are child friendly. Your baby will get a lot of attention in your accommodation and out and about.

Sorrento itself is pretty much on the flat in town so not bad for the buggy. The historic lanes are cobbled though so could be a bit bumpy! We managed it with a wheelchair though once! Suggest you choose an Hotel in town to avoid the hills on the outskirts for ease. There are a couple of kids playgrounds in town too. Plenty of gelato on offer!

Rome is a long way from Sorrento to be honest for a day trip. Don't think your little one could take it (personal opinion).

Sight seeing wise you can easily visit Pompeii (hmm for a 1 yr old?), Positano (lots of steps), Amalfi, Capri. Probably for the Amalfi Coast stick to an organised tour then you are guaranteed a seat on an air conditioned coach.

Sorrento itself is fantastic with stunning views of Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples, great shops (local wares & designer), good choice of eating places delis and supermarkets plus pavement cafes for people watching and May a lovely time of year to go in our experience. Usually sunbathing weather but not humid or too busy. Choose an Hotel with a pool and you are sorted!

Think you should be fine.

There are many affordable family run trattorias / pizzerias in town. Of course there are also several pretty expensive ones!

Supermarkets to purchase your own produce for picnics etc. on the go plus small family run delis and places selling panninis etc.

Personally we choose to stay B&B and experience the different places in town - but then we don't travel with a baby! If you went half board you could still enjoy the atmosphere in the evening and sit at a pavement cafe after dinner. Your accommodation might also allow you to swap dinner for lunch - some do, some don't.

Again, baby will be welcome everywhere.
