Although the fate of the Metro del Mare hydrofoil service still isn't clear, it's perhaps worth remembering that they're not alone in offering excursions from Sorrento.

For instance there's the long-standing "Blue Cruise" operated with the good ship 'Marine Club' - for details, click on the Union Jack flag here....

http://www.minicrociere.net/crociera_azzurra.html

Those may still relate to the 2010 season, but usually it runs every day except Thursdays.

I called them today, and it should start in mid-May, so check nearer the time.

The overall schedule is kept here...

http://www.minicrociere.net/incalendario.html

............................................

On those Thursdays, they run their "Green Cruise" - which comes over to Ischia, after calling in for an hour or so at our pretty neighbour, the island of Procida.

Correspondingly, click on the flag here...

http://www.minicrociere.net/crociera_verde.html

The start date for this one is somewhat later... I was told "definitely by July, possibly a little sooner" but, again, check to be sure - perhaps once the Blue tour is running?

Don't really know why, but that always seems to be a very jolly outing - and last year it was good to see them making their first visit to Ischia as early as 17th June...

............................................................

And as they say, "Other mini-cruises are available"....

For instance, the operators of the S. Valentino will again be offering tours of the AC from Sorrento - which they tell me will also be starting in mid-May. Ask locally, or look here for the phone number...

Perhaps it was only on a private outing, but that vessel turned up here one Sunday a few years back...

Of course, there may be more - or you else could hire a boat for the day!

PS - If you've not heard of either island...

This is Ischia.... http://www.pbase.com/isolaverde/allaboutischia

Hi Peter

Last year in August/September there was another company apart from Metro DM operating ferries as well as the cruises you refer to, cant remember the name but I have the tickets somewhere, you just booked on the day as usual in the main port at Sorrento.

We used both companies and took the Metro DM to Napoli for a great day out.

More as transport services than organised excursions, there are several lines that at times operate in and out of Sorrento - any of these ring a bell?

We have done the Blue Cruise and it was a fun way to see the coastline.

Very unstable though - not good if you are prone to sea sickness - several people only went one way them disembarked and travelled back by road!

We were fine though.

Are all of these boats rough or is there one that isn't bad? I'm prone to seasickness so I definitely don't want to get on the wrong boat.

Look back up this thread and you'll find a single negative comment - about one ship, on one occasion - and I'd suggest you don't let that panic you too much?

At other times, the same poster has described their outing on the "Marine Club" rather differently...

Several ladies of similarly-advanced age still cruise the ports of the Bay, and up and down the Amalfi Coast - and as well as that ship you'll no doubt spot the elegant 'Santa Lucia'...

http://www.pbase.com/isolaverde/image/133687807

.. the Falerno...

http://www.pbase.com/isolaverde/image/133688819

and perhaps the slightly newer "Myriam"...

On summer Thursdays we've been watching the Green Cruise arrive here for several years now (and an untold number of other excursions!) without noticing passengers in a similar state of distress.

A wide range of vessels is in use; generally the smaller ones do the shorter hops, to or from places with only minimal quays or jetties, whereas the larger ones stick to those with better facilities... Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, Salerno, Procida, Ischia, Capri etc.

Several of the lines listed above make a point of showing their fleets ("la flotta") - for instance...

http://www.coopsantandrea.com/eng/flotta/mariamadre_eng.asp?foto=mariamadre1

and

http://www.navlib.it/flotta/default.asp

Mostly it's all plain sailing, with the worst you'll experience being a few moments of bumpiness going from one sea current to another (like a train, going over points on the line) or near channels such as the one between Capri and the mainland - though not always...

Fortunately September's weather here is usually quite settled, and the sea calm most of the time:

P your response to the unstable comment is a bit OTT surely and NBB only referred to several people not travelling back as well as saying it was fun.

Would be good if the regular posters could all get on and try to offer only advice and opinions rather than trying to prove points!

Re september weather it wasnt calm last September when we were in Sorrento and indeed average rainfall in september is worse than the average for other months except March, Oct, Nov and Dec according to meoweather.com/history/italySorrento.html.

Best to pick a calm day if in doubt!!

Personally, I'd say the obvious concern that remark had raised merited a response?

And having seen the ship in question many, many times I know that - whatever it was like on that particular day - that wasn't typical.

About as untypical in fact as the short snap of bad weather we had last September is of the month in general.

And, only a day or two later, someone was writing..."on a lighter note the weather is back to normal, sat here in Piazza tasso and its glorious."

Must you keep trawling through all these historic posts; we all know the weather can be very good or indeed very wet in September and the historic records prove this.

As i said earlier best pick a calm day and have a fun time if worried about getting seasick.

Last September by the way had more than one or two days short snap and having been to Sorrento/Amalfi Coast every year for the last 7 years in September we have experienced this at some point but as we said in the posts last year the weather can be mixed although we prefer the temperatures at that time of year.
