You will need to catch a Sita bus for Amalfi and then change for Sorrento. Buy your tickets at a Tabbaccheria or bar before you get on.There are two bus stops for the Sita at Positano, La Sponda and Chiesa Nuova. Check with your hotel to see which is closest.
The ferries may or may not be working in early April. The docks are not far from the station. You could go down and ask on the day if the weather is fine.
The ferry dock is really close to the station - couple of hundred yards - and much nicer and easier than the bus if they are running.
The Concordia Dock is 800 meters from the Salerno train station. Allow 10 minutes for the very easy walk.
The Cooperativa Sant'Andrea ferry boats operate from April through October, BUT service in EARLY April might be a little "iffy", so you should enquire beforehand (call the operator on your cell phone or send them an e-mail).
Otherwise, simply take the two SITA buses (connection in Amalfi) as noted above. The travel agency inside the foyer of the Salerno train station (closed on Sunday) sells the UNICO COSTIERA bus tickets for non-residents. Get a 24-hr. ticket for 7.20 Euros, or a 3-day ticket for 18 Euros.
Bear in mind that the ferry boat schedules are limited, compared to the hourly SITA buses. The ferry also won't run in bad weather.
We caught a train to Salerno, then walked to the Ferry Terminal about 800metres, 10 minutes
We just missed a ferry but spent the time looking around Salerno which is beautiful. We were happy we took the ferry as you get to see the Amalfi Coastline from the ocean and are safe for the children.
However if the ferries aren't running, bus is the only other way to go.
Do bear in mind that, so they can be back again in time for their dinner - and before it's too dark - the last of the Coop boats will usually leave Salerno's Porto Turistico at around 15:30 in the afternoon:
... so no good if your train would be arriving there any time after about 15:15...
Jdfe, when are you going?
We will be there in August. Also, if anyone has any info on the Pathways of the Gods walk, I'd be keen to hear. We are thinking of doing the 10k portion of the walk around Bomerano? And Nocelle and Positano.
The ferry boats run daily, including Sundays, from April 1 through October 31, from the Concordia Dock, which is 800 meters from the Salerno train station.
HINT: Verify schedules if travelling at the very beginning of April, or the very end of October, as well as on days when the weather is bad.
