Lucca, Pisa, etc.

I am going to Italy in March. I want to see Lucca, Pisa, and Viareggio. Can't decide which town to stay in. Any suggestions? I don't want a B&B. Don't want to take a chance of having to share a bathroom. Also, any tips on getting around by train or bus would be greatly appreciated.

as a base Lucca is a lovely Town,

These three cities are all less than 30 minutes apart by train. See http://trenitalia.it/homepage_en.html for current train schedules, putting in a date within the next seven days to see the prices. Schedules will be different in March (and are not yet available), but the travelling times and frequencies will be about the same.

I agree wityh sophie - Lucca is the pick of these three as a base - it's a really lovely old town. Local bus and train services are good, and you'll have no problem visiting the other two places from a base in Lucca.

As sophie also says, many B&B's have ensuite rooms nowadays. But anyway, there is no danger of having to 'take a chance' - you will know when you book that your room is ensuite.

...i agree...but maybe you may prefere to stay in a village...into lucca walls you cant'go by car...lovely villages are:

closer to the beach and near both towns: vecchiano, san giuliano terme and massarosa

closer lucca: segromigno, bagni di lucca

closer pisa but not to lucca and to the beach: chianni, volterra

...ideas??
