Madrid In June, Suggestions On City or Other Towns Nearby

Hello!

My wife and I are traveling to Rome in the end of June. We haven't been to Spain yet and have been debating on which city to go to. We finally have decided on Madrid over Barcelona.

We are planning to stay for 6 nights in Madrid in early June. Would you suggest us spending the whole stay in Madrid or setting a side possibly a few nights in towns nearby?

If other towns are suggested would these be day-trips or do we need to stay there at night?

Lastly, what areas and in Madrid would you recommend us to book our hotel?

In advance I thank you for taking the time to respond.

First of all can i congratulate you on your decision, madrid is a much more authentic spanish city then barcelona and far less pretentious. 6 nights seems like alot in madrid, that is just my opinion, i really think if you cut that down to maybe 3 or 4 nights. Toledo is a wonderful historic city about 1 hour and a half by bus from madrid, you could consider spending a night there o just doing a day trip like i did. Salamanca also is within easy reach of madrid, its a univercity but very nice place to spend a night actually and it will give you a break from the noise and congestion of madrid

In terms of staying in madrid, there are many hotels located near and around the plaza espana which is city centre located at the end of Gran Via which is one of madrid principal streets. if you go the opposite direction there are many upmarket hotels located around the prado museum. but as i dont know your budget im not sure where to direct you. A barrio called malasana is a nice area to stay, you could find a pension there which is basically a bed and breakfast but without the breakfast. have a good stay, you will enjoy madrid im sure

Lucky you, I love Madrid. Agree with other poster that Toledo is definitely worth a day trip, you can easily get there and back by train. You will have plenty to do in Madrid also - you must see the Prado, its amazing. We always stay in the Best Western Atlantico when we go to Madrid. Its right in the centre, on the Gran Via, so you can walk everywhere easily. Have a great time!

Day trips we've done from Madrid include Valley de los Caidos, El Escorial, Salamanca, and Toledo. All are well worth the time spent. Agree with OP who suggested spending a night in Salamanca. It's a neat town.

Segovia is another typical daytrip from Madrid.

Toledo and Segovia are easy to reach by train (high speed)

El Escorial and Aranjuez with commuter trains

Salamanca is a bit far, can be done as a daytrip, but spending a night there is also a good idea.

Avila and Cuenca are other possible destinations as daytrips from Madrid.

You may stay those 6 days in Madrid, give 3 days for the city and 3 days for daytrips.

All great advice. My two cents: why not spend 3 nights in Madrid then take the high speed train for 3 in Seville? Now that would be a great trip.

Bobby:

If you can afford it, the best area for a hotel is the Barrio Salamanca. It is the most upscale area of Madrid and easy to go downtown on the metro, bus, or taxi.

Bobby:

Look at the Things to Do section for information on day trips and what transportation to take.
