Where to go first?

We are planning a trip to Spain in 2008, but we want to know where to go first? Should we fly into Madrid or Barcelona? We want to go first to a main city and then travel to smaller areas from there. What do you recommend?

How long have you got & what are your interests? Also, what is your budget & how do you intend to travel?

We spent 4 nights in Madrid and 6 nights in Barcelona earlier this month. Both cities were great, but I personally enjoyed Barcelona more. There are several good day trips to smaller towns from both cities as well. How long will you be in Spain and what time of the year are you going?

We didn't get to Barcelona, so l can't compare the two, but we loved Madrid and there is a lot you can do with that as your base. We took a day trip to Segovia and would have gone to Toledo too if we'd had time. We went from there to Sevilla, which is only 2.5 hours by the AVE train. After a couple days in Sevilla (where there is so much to see) we took another train to Granada and spent two days there -- the Alhambra was one of the highlights of our trip. We flew back to Madrid for only 35E on Spanair in just an hour and then flew home from there.
