Please help with final list of hotels

Hi again.

For dec 28 or 29 through Jan 2.

We want to be central, charming, walkable to main sites (we walk a lot). We normally don’t spend much time in the hotel, but given holiday closings and cold, we may need to, so a great bar is a plus.

-Huertas area-

Axel hotel on attocha street

Hotel Urban on San Jeronimo

Catalonia las Cortas (seems sterile?)

Gran Hotel Inglés (splurge$)

—Chueca area-

Only You on Calle Barquillo

The Principal (splurge$)

—Palace area-

Hotel Preciados (too far fir a short visit?)

Most are in the 200-300 euro range. Inglés and Principal are about 500. If they are really worth it, we’ll pay it.

Which would you pick?

Thank you!!

(But if anyone thinks those on the longer list are better, all advice welcome)

Thanks again

Some comments on your hotel list

* Axel hotel. Its target: gay guests.

* Hotel Urban. The Urban has the most modern decoration of those on the list.

* Catalonia Las Cortes. Sterile, do you mean impersonal? It is one of the best rated hotels in that area.

* Great English Hotel. One of the oldest hotels in Madrid that has recently been fully renovated trying to recreate the luxury of old times.

* Only You. Considered the best boutique hotel in Madrid. Distinct personality.

* The Principal. A good hotel but more "sterile" than the Only You. Excellent restaurant though.

* Hotel Preciados. The hotel is good but located in a shopping area that will be too crowded at Christmas / NYE

Of the ones you have selected my top two would be:

Only You

Urban

Why not rent an apartment. We did last week of September. Two bedrooms, 2 baths, large living area and an outdoor patio steps from Plaza Sol, 10 minutes from Plaza Mayor. Perfect! And economical.

Thanks Sean. I’m a firm anti-apartment renter. Much prefer hotels.

Dody47.For me, personally, I would narrow it down to these three:

Only You is quite charming. Very cool part of town. Great shopping and some little theaters.

Catalonia Las Cortes looks VERY nice and so very close to Plaza Santa Anna. Lots to do there like, drinks and roof top views from the ME MADRID REINA VICTORIA in said plaza. Lots of bars/ restaurants near by but, most of Madrid has lots of bars/ restaurants near by, lol.

And finally, Hotel Preciados. Yes, it will be WAY crowed in the area on Christmas/NYE but again, personally, I like that energy. It's not for everybody.

On a side note, I haven't stayed in a hotel in Madrid since about 2007. It's been apartments for me and my wife(she talked me into it and now, I love it). We've visited almost every November and December since 2003. It's our home away from home.

The Hotel Only You is a design masterpiece.

Calle del Barquillo has many good small boutiques. A famous women’s jewelry store is Coolook (moderately priced), at Calle del Barquillo, 34. Their earrings are famous.

Benny: Are you getting kick backs from this store? You mention it at every opportunity, even when totally unrelated to the actual post.
