Lisbon to Gibraltar....Train or Bus

Seeing lots of conflicting ideas and opinions which all seem to lead to a car hire...Preferring not to do that for this leg of our trip...what are the best options....from Gibraltar we plan to take a bus or train to Madrid....All suggestions welcomed....time not an issue!!

Thanks!!

If you could do the trip in reverse it would be a lot easier, but obviously I don't know your full itinerary.

If it is possible to adjust your schedule, you could get the train from Lisbon to Madrid. Then for the Gibraltar leg of your trip you could then get the train from Madrid to Algeciras. Onward flights could then be made from Malaga if needed.

However, if this is not possible, your only realistic option not involving car hire, would be getting the bus from Lisbon to Seville, and then a bus from Seville to Algeciras. Buses from Algeciras then take you to La Linea, a short stroll from the Gibraltar border. Journey time in total will be around 12 hours, if you get lucky with connecting times. You could, of course, split up the journey and spend some time in the lovely city of Seville.

Great idea...actually we would take a flight from Lisbon to Madrid and do a round trip from Madrid to almost Gibraltar by train.... ...The Lisbon to Madrid flight is short and not expensive....I am now going to do more research, but others have said that there is no train towards Gibraltar....Thanks!!!!

The train from Madrid to Algeciras takes a little over 5 hours and costs 72 euros one way (or 112 euros in "preferente"). The train journey is highly recommended - the trains are very comfortable and you pass through some spectacular scenery.

Buses from Algeciras to La Linea (gibraltar border) take 30 minutes and leave frequently.

Just to, perhaps, complicate things for you...the train from Madrid stops in Ronda. If you get chance, a day trip in Ronda comes highly recommended!!
