What beaches, classy hotels, countryside in Galicia?

Two of us have one week in Galicia middle of August - we love beaches and 'luxury' hotels and food either inland or of course by the sea. Any ideas? We fly to S de C. and will hire a car. Also plan to go over into Portugal for a couple of days. Can you take car over border? Are resorts and beaches heaving at this time of year or can one escape the crowds? Any suggestions for two, three night stays in villages, towns, beaches mountains most welcome. Bit confused in what areas are the 'best' for exploring. Not mad on buzzing cities. Thanks a million!

Can you take a hire car into Portugal?

Most companies will allow that, but you must check if they do and they do not charge an extra fee for the privilege.

Of you sue the Autovias (motorways) in Portugal ensure you understand the rules for paying the electronic tolls which some of them have.

Tourism in general is low key here in Galicia. It is nothing like the Med coast. Having said that you will find some parts a lot busier than others. The busiest areas are from say Noia southwards. The nearer to Vigo you get the busier it will be. If the weather is very hot then those days the beaches will be very busy. Areas where there are fiestas will also be busy.

The least crowded beaches will be found from Ferrol and along the coast towards Asturias. There is a reason for that, they are the coolest in Galicia.

You cannot really combine mountains with the beach in a 2 or 3 night stay. The hilliest part of the coast is Costa da Morte. Maybe stay just to the south of this peninsular and have the best of both worlds. Sea cliffs, hills, and beaches with less tourism.

with regards to hotel and with keeping with the suggestion I made above there is only one 4 star hotel on a beach location in the area.

You maybe able to find others when you change your search criteria on the website for tourism in Galicia.

The most famous high class hotel in Galicia is the Paradore in Baiona.

A very good hotel in La Coruña is the Melia Maria Pita, right on the beach. From this hotel you can walk to almost everywhere in town.

My recommendation for a good restaurant:

Restaurante Coral

Callejon de la Estacada, 9 (Beside Avenida de la Marina)

Tel: 981-200-569

Web: http://www.restaurantemarisqueriacora...

Closed Sundays.

This restaurant has won many prizes: Unipyme (1985); Golden Cok Medal (1987); Plato de Oro de la Gastronomia Española (1987); Empresa del Año (1999); Tres Tenedores from the Guia Michelin; Medalla de Galicia, Premio Prestigio; and Premio a Potenciacion da Cocina Galega (2005).

The restaurant was founded by Cesar Gallega Pita in 1954 and his two sons Andres and Martin are now running this restaurant. The restaurant is a very elegant restaurant with artwork on the walls and also is decorated with all the awards it has received over the years. Service is excellent and very expert, knowing how to pace the dishes chosen by the clients and serving them in the correct order. The wine is served excellently chilled.

The seafood served is excellent, with everything very fresh. The meat dishes are also done very well. All the food is served very elegantly. The pulpo Gallega is served elegantly on a ceramic plate, unlike other restaurants that serve this popular dish on a wooden board. The ensalada ventresca has lettuce, tomatoes, tuna, and red peppers, and is delicious. The merluza albariño is cooked with albariño wine and is another good choice. The revuelto grelos zamburiñas is an omelet that contains turnip greens. The cerdo iberico comes with the most mouth- watering fig sauce.

The best thing about this world-class restaurant is that it is moderately priced. It does not cost an arm and a leg. The prices are competitive with ordinary restaurants that do not have the prestige or elegance of this restaurant.
