Is it ok to wear a (formal) playsuit to dinner in Barcelona?

Hi (macasoma's daughter here).

I'm going to Barcelona in a couple of weeks and would like to know whether it would be ok to wear a fairly formal playsuit if going out in the evenings for dinner/tapas/sightseeing?

It's pale blue with a lace part on the top, made of a nice material. The bottom half is fairly short shorts, but not like hot pants or anything!

Thanks in advance :)

Erm. Not really sure what a formal playsuit is but if you are covering essentials then it should be ok. Presumably you're not bothered about blending in.

Well, that was a bit judgemental.

Playsuits are trendy, I guess, so you should fit in fine at a nice restaurant. Barcelona is very fashion-forward so anything tasteful will work.

I've never claimed to be anything other than judgemental. Don't recall seeing playsuits in Barcelona in late June but I try not to stare at young women too much. I'm way too old.

it is not popular here pandachris, even staring on the streets you will not see so many, and 99% of them it is a tourist, british, who wear it.

Wear what 'you' feel comfortable wearing.

What to wear in Barcelona?

This question periodically surfaces over and over in the forum. Hey girls out there, I hope we shed a bit of light on this matter once and for all...

Obviously one can dress as one pleases, there are no 'codes' in most situations and the city is full of people wearing all sorts of clothes and styles. Barcelona's motto seems to be 'live and let live' on this issue. But this doesn't mean that there's not a very self-defined Barcelonian style, in fact, the city is one of the fashion hubs in Europe and there are regular international events related to fashion and lifestyle in the city.

As per visitors, some have definitively a more acute sense of 'blending' than others. For those, I'd say that Barcelona is an accommodating city in this arena, smart casual is the norm but, being a big city, all forms and shapes of different trends are found. Among local women complements do play a big role in their wardrobe. The trick seems to be in mixing-and-matching rather than wearing expensive brands.

But no, I don't presume to be a fashion guru, so I'm going to derive you to some of the most popular local bloggers for you to have an idea on what's "in" in these shores. I feel that bloggers will be more realistic in showing you what Barcelona women wear rather than fashion sites or magazines since, as you know, a lot of the supposedly 'trendy fashion' seen in many designers' and magazines' sites is then hardly ever seen in the streets, you know what I mean!

The sites are only either in Catalan or Spanish -depending on the mother tongue of the blogger- but again, this is to be expected since these are blogs addressed to local women. Use google translate!

So, here it goes a few of them -I tried to pick different styles...:

and this one, while being a sort of magazine, it's supposed to be 'cool hunting': http://bcncoolhunter.com/

But again... remember: live and let live, so do wear what you please!

Enjoy!

Macasoma:

Yes, Barcelona is a city where women dress well, and that is why there are so many boutiques that cater to them. You will not blend in if you wear your playsuit.
