Shopping in Barcelona

We will soon be visiting Barcelona for a week before departing on a Cruise.

My wife would like some suggestions on places to shop.

She is interested in finding places that sell things that are unique to Barcelona or Spain.

Thanks

Bob

They have the El Corte Ingles Department Store at the Plaza de Catalunya. Around Gaudi's Holy Family Church they have many inexpensive souvenir shops.

Benny;

When I did a Google Search on Gaudi's Holy Family Church it came back Sagrada Familia (Holy Family Church).

Is this the Church you are refering to? If not, could you provide an address?

Thanks

Bob

Yes it's sagrada Familia (possibly the best knnow landmark of Barcelona)

You can find near there and in Las Ramblas all kind of cheap tacky souvenirs

If you prefer classy, nice stuff, better forget about these and shop at the Museum shops that have not cheap but quality nice items. The shops of Picasso museum, Textil, MACBA, MNAC are my favs (I sometimes bought for friends or myself)

There are really few things that may be considered unique to Barcelona. Things typical from other parts of Spain would better be find... in other parts of Spain ;) However, probably the best place to find a variety of Spanish artisan's works is in Poble Espanyol

I would have a look as well at Caelum in carrer de la Palla (near the Gotic Cathedral) for nice food items produced in monasteries, and wander around El Born (a must-do in itself) to discover there small local-designer shops for contemporary jewelery and fashion complements

And depending on your dates, there may be artisan markets around.

Other museum shops that I like: museu maritim and museu d'historia de catalunya. The Laie bookshops/gift-shops in the Gaudí sites also have nice stuff.

Artisan market held at bottom end of Ramblas at the weekend. Quite often at top of Portal del angel just below Plaça catalunya there are stalls with craft items (last week featured artisans of Girona province).

Note that flamenco dancers and castanets are NOT a souvenir of Barcelona. They belong in Andalucia really. Even less so (because not even a souvenir of SPAIN) are Mexican hats! Just 2 examples of Ramblas-souvenir tyle tat.

Lynda,

I've held onto my sombrero my parents bought me 35+ years ago in Barcelona as an "authentic" spanish hat!! lol! At least this time (September) I'll be old enough to choose my own souvenirs! Thanks for the smile!
