Route from Potes to Cares Gorge with N621 closure

Hi everyone,

We will be staying in Potes June 19-23,2018. We would like to hike the Cares Gorge during that week, and wonder if you have advice regarding the best route to either Poncebos or Cain during that period, given that the N621 will be closed.

Many thanks for any assistance you might be able to provide !

The best way to do this is to do the Cares walk from the Cain end, which is the best end to start anyway, so bonus! Leave Potes, direction Riaño, which has a beautiful position on a reservoir, this takes you over Puerto San Glorio, then head to Posada de Valdeon, which has a couple of bars, and then down to Cain, which has several restaurants and bars and souvenir shops, as well as parking. Do the walk for as long as you wish, before turning back. There is no need to go all the way to Poncebos, when the path starts dropping at the end, turn back, you'll avoid a 300m include/decline, and you've adjust seen the best bits. Then if you're going on to Cangas, you can continue on over the Puerto de Panderrueda, which has a lovely picnic area and a viewpoint worth the 300m walk to, and then drop down to the Beyos gorge (not as impressive as the Hermida gorge, but still impressive), and on to Cangas.

There are also several interesting spots on the road between Posada and Cain, wolf traps, viewpoints and a lovely positioned chapel. Potes-Cain vs Potes-Poncebos is not much difference driving, and I think Cain is the nicer way to do it.

You are more than welcome! Please pay attention to the second of the two posts I wrote above, I was on my phone at the time rather than a computer, and couldn't delete the first one!

How long of a drive can one expect from Potes to Cain? We are trying to decide if we should move campsites in order to do the hike. Thank you!

Potes to Cain takes about an hour and a half on windy but good mountain roads (including two mountain passes). If you've got anyone who gets car sick in the back seat I'd maybe reconsider, otherwise it's fine. Whether you move campsites or not I'd say depends on where you're going next. I don't know whether you're camping or motorhoming, but if it's the latter, our blog on our trip to Caín might help: https:/…
