La Gomera in Janurary

We are going to book a week in La Gomera for mid Jan next year and was wondering if anyone had been there at this time of year and what it was like, weather, is there much in the way of places to eat etc.

Usually by the southern coast you have a good chance of fine weather although it is the time of the year when you could experience some rain - but it does dry up very quickly. If you're walking make sure that you take warmer gear as it will be chillier inthe mountains. Pleanty of places to eat in Valle Gran Ray and San Sebastian. Just a few in Playa Santiago. Very few in the northern towns.

Thank you for this, was not planning on doing much walking, just wanted a week away after christmas to relax but at the same time didn't want to find ourselves in a place that was closed, again thanks for your help.

Our first experience of La Gomera was at this time of year in 2000 when we stayed for a fortnight in the Parador. We have been coming back regularly ever since. You should expect temperatures during the day to be in the early 20s, and at night to be 14/16ish, so a nice comfortable temperature. Yes, it might rain as 'jevvy' has explained but this often depends on where you stay. Typically, the southern half of the island is warm and dry; the northern half cooler with cloud. Effectively, this means you should be looking to stay in San Sebastian, Playa Santiago or Valle Gran Rey for the best chance of good weather. San Sebastian is the island capital and has the best array of restaurants and bars, and is very Spanish and local. It is also home to the Parador reviews for which you can find elsewhere on Trip Adviser. SS has the advantage of being the port where the ferries arrive so once you have arrived on the island there is no further travelling to do. Playa Santiago is some 40 minutes drive from SS and is a small fishing village, but also has the Fred Olsen Jardin Tecina hotel, the only 'resort' hotel on the island. Reviews again elsewhere on Trip Adviser. Valle Gran Rey is some 75 minutes drive from SS, but both Santiago and VGR are on the small ferry route from SS. Might suggest SS (and Parador) as the best bet for a first time on Gomera unless you want a resort type place. Hope this helps.
