Bullfight

I am interested watching a bullfight. Having done some research, it seems that the best option is Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza? Any other recommendations?

However, I do not quite understand the seating arrangements and the price.

Anyone with any experience to share? e.g. how to book a ticket, how advance to book one, the time for the fight, the duration etc?

Worthwhile to watch one?

Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza is "the" bullring in Sevilla. Is it worthwhile? That will depend on you. It's a decision you have to make. Bullfights typically last just under three hours (6 fights w/three matadors). They generally begin at 6:00 pm, but it will depend on your dates.

As far as booking tickets, it will depend on when you will be there (http://www.tauroentrada.com/).

Search for "faena" in youtube, and take a look and check if you may like it. Usually bullfights are very explicit, so not for everybody...

'Worthwhile to watch one?' - google will give you much more than you need - 'you tube' - and if you do go, do the decent thing by all in your party and make them aware of what it entails.

"Having done some research..."

"Worthwhile to watch one?"

Perhaps you should extend the reference terms of your research a little.

I have just read an article about Juan Jose Padilla from Jerez who was gored last October in a bullfight at Zaragoza and lost the sight of his left eye when the horn pierced his head.

Thankfully Padilla survived and now wears an eye patch. What is more he has already returned to the bull ring. The bravery of this man is immense. But it is his living. He has a family to support.

If you want to understand the Spanish Andalucian culture and understand the people then visiting Seville during Semana Santa and the Feria and witnessing a bullfight at the Maestranza is an essential way of bringing all this to life.

I love the music. If you sit in the sun it will be painfully hot. the sombra seats cost a lot more.

It is still a barbarous sight, and thank goodness the young of Spain do not show their support.

The young of Spain are having a very hard time these days because of economic circumstances with unemployment highest in Europe. Perhaps half the youth cannot find work. Costs of attending the Maestranza are high and this is one reason it attracts the well heeled and those with money.

aligotravel, as you can see it is a very controversial topic, also among locals...

anyway, answering to your question:

- Maestranza is the only bullring in Seville, but if you happen to be in Huelva, Malaga, Ronda, etc. they all have their own bullrings, so check where and when.

- They usually start at 5pm.

- They usually go for 3 hours, a bit less maybe (it will be 6 bulls, 2 for each bullfighter, and count around 25 mins each)

- There are many different kinds of tickets, but the two main ones you need to know are Sol (Sun) and Sombra (Shade). DO NOT take the Sol ones (cheaper) because you'll have the sun in your face the whole time (not pleasant).

- Seating in La Maestranza is somewhat small and not comfortable. Chances are someone will be smoking (even cigars) close to you.

- You can buy the tickets once you are there, go in the morning to La Maestranza ticket desks and ask for options. Notice that if you happen to be there for April's Fair (the end week of April) tickets will be VERY expensive and almost impossible to get (it is supposed to be when the best bullfighters come to town).

Nevertheless, as I said before, check a "faena maestranza" in youtube and realize it is an explicit show, not for everybody...
