Granada in February?

Our college age daughter will be studying in Granada from Jan. to May 2011. We would like to visit her with our other teens who have a school vacation the last week in February. We are from northern New England so cool weather (needing a jacket and gloves) does not bother us. Can anyone give us a sense of what the weather will be like then? We would like to consider a one day bike tour in the area and prefer outdoor activities. Would these things be doable at this time of year? We will probably rent an apartment rather than a hotel room. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Kathy:

The temperature averages for February are 2 to 16C. There could be chance of showers.

If you are dressed warmly, you should be able to go out and see the sights. I, myself, travel in Spain during that month and do not let the cold shut me in.

Of course the ski slopes of the Sierra Nevada should be busy and can be reached from Granada. http://granadamap.com/sn/

Thank you for the link re: skiing in Granada. That was the first thing my husband asked me about this trip--"Is there skiing?" I'm not sure I'm brave enough to take a bus, rent equipment and negotiate ski slopes in my pidgin Spanish-- but it's something to think about.

The weather in February is normally sunny during the day but cold at night (around 3C)

Last year it broke all the rules and rained the whole time however I still managed to go walking every weekend. I bought 10 umbrellas at IKEA Malaga which wer very useful.

You can hire bikes at ecoway

Click on the bike on this map

Granada is quite hilly so it may be a good idea to get an electrically assisted bike. Ecoway do those too.

You can also hire segways in Plaza Nueva

Kathy,

I noticed your posting and the 'Londonderry' in your name caught my eye :-) We are in Salem, NH and heading to Spain next week! I don't have a clue what February will be like there, but I have been looking at the differences between Salem and Sevilla (where we are spending most of our trip - side trips to Granada and Cadiz).

Right now we are just getting to 50 during the day, but Sevilla is around 70 - give or take a couple of degrees. Granada is further north, and their forcast right now is about 10 degrees warmer than here and 10 less than Sevilla.... I am sure February will be colder than November though.

From what I have read - you won't have to deal with the snow and ice there that we get here - and hopefully no 20 below wind-chill days! After a long New England winter, I'm sure it will be a great visit!
