The Romeríá (pilgrimage) Procession starts in the town centre at around 11am, it makes its way (slowly!) up through El Calvario, past the Town Hall and then across to the Feria Ground. It is enormous, with lots of spectacularly-decorated floats, carts being pulled by pairs of bullocks, marching bands, hundreds of very-talented gypsy horsemen etc. plus lots of competitive dancing all the way along the route.

Thousands follow the behind the Procession, and tens of thousands gather along the route to cheer it on. Obviously every bar and restaurant along the way has outside counters to keep you 'refreshed'!

The atmosphere as it goes through El Calvario is remarkable, although El Calvario has very narrow old streets somehow everyone manages to squeeze through - the noise is deafening.

Very large crowds also gather around the Town Hall area at the top of El Calvario, where there are lots of larger bars and restaurants knocking out beers and all sorts of specialities.

The Procession then arrives at the Feria Ground (where there is more dancing etc.), and all the horses and bullocks are taken off into the pine woods for shade.

The Peñas (clubs) all have their casas (clubhouses) by the Feria Ground, just by the pine woods. Every Peña has things going on (dances, monster-sized paellas etc.), and most of them are open to visitors.

Everything comes to an end at around 8am the next morning. Do not miss it, it's a marvellous day (and night) out.

A rough guide to the route of the Romería and approximate timings:

The Procession assembles in Avenida de los Manantiales between 10:00 and 11:00.

11:00 Plaza Costa del Sol -> Avenida Palma de Mallorca

12:00 Avenida Palma de Mallorca -> Avenida de Joan Miró

12:30 Avenida de Joan Miró -> Calle de Fernando de Prado

13:00 Calle de Rafael Quintana Rosado

13:30 Ayuntamiento

It then crosses the by-pass to Avenida del Real, where the Feria Ground, the Peñas, the theatre, the concert hall and the bullring are, arriving there from about 14:00 onwards.

The Romería should be on 22nd September this year - the procession will follow the same route as in the post further up this thread (#7).
