Train from Madrid to Malaga

Could someone help with the trains. We need to go from Madrid to Malaga by train in November. What's the best way to do it and how long does it take?

Does anyone know if we can take a car we rented in Malaga to Portugal?

Does anyone know if we can take a train from Marbella/Malaga to Portimao Portugal? How long would that take?

We're going to be in Marbella the first week of November and then we decided as long as the air fares are so high we would stay another week and go to Portugal. If anyone has any suggestions we would like to hear from you. Thanks, Linda

There are through trains from Madrid to Malaga, and Malaga to Seville, but not from Seville to the Algarve, or Malaga - Marbella.

Info on Spanish Rail site at http://www.renfe.es/ingles/index.html.

I don't know if you can take a Spain - rented car into Portugal, but that would be the easiest way of getting around if it's possible. I expect someone else will know, and have advice as to where to hire from.

Alternatively, there are lots of buses around Malaga and Marbella, including Marbella - Seville, run by Portillo. See

http://www.ctsa-portillo.com/horarios.html

There are two buses a day from Seville to the Algarve, run by EVA, whose website will also tell you about most local services on the Algarve. Go first to

www.eva-bus.net/lagos_sevilha.php…

We've used Portillo and EVA buses and they are OK, but on separate trips - we've not tried to go from Costa del Sol to Algarve.

To look for train schedules, the Spanish Rail site does have current times. Neaer the date of travel you can check the day you want to travel and even book seats. A new fast AVE link between Cordoba and Malaga is being built but I don't think it will be opened this year.

The quickest rail journey between Madrid and Malaga is 4 hours.

www.renfe.es

or for a simplified english language version:

http://horarios.renfe.es/hir/ingles.html

and the specific train that runs the Madrid to Malaga route is called TALGO200 and Spanish page is:

www.renfe.es/ave/index_talgo200_malaga.html

The train routes in southern Spain (Andalucia) are shown on this map:

renfe.es/mediadistancia/mapa_andalucia.html

travelling between southern Spain and the Algarve (southern Portugal) means taking train to Seville then a bus. No train link is yet established .

So a hire car is a good idea. Travelling to Portugal is normally allowed but check before booking a car. A one way drop off in Portugal is more difficult with Spanish rental companies based in the Costa del Sol however it's perfectly possible to rent a car in Marbella or Malaga then drop it off in Seville.

We did a similar drive in reverse yesterday - Tavira on the Algarve back to our home east of Malaga. With one 15 minute stop the journey took 5 hours. Drove from Tavira to Portimao on Sunday - took about 55 minutes direct so add another hour to our total time for journey Malaga-Portimao i.e. approx 6 hours.

Ida y Vuelta = return. Ida = one way.

Average price of one way Madrid-Malaga on AVE fast speed NEW service which started last December is Euros 70 approx. For return you get a discount on the total price. When Malaga service opened RENFE had promotional fares. For more info look in the Malaga Forum ? The RENFE web site is difficult to navigate unless you use it in Spain all the time.
