Is staying in Estepona without a car possible?

We're going to be in Estepona for a week in November. We'd rather not rent a car if possible. There are 4 of us, so taxis should be cheaper by the person. We, also, want to see outlying cities(Ronda, Granada, etc.); hopefully by train and bus. Any suggestions as to what is the best way to do this? Thanks.

Hi Tobias, It will be fun to go by bus and taxis. Most times the bus time schedule does not suit the special places that you want to see. The taxi from Estepona to all the other cities you want to visit will be expensive. My recomendation will be to rent a car in combination with your airline ticket to visit Spain.

Or try one of these.

If you are a student. you can rent a car in ASATEJ... it is like a student agency where you can rent cars, buy ticket flights... etc. look in their web site.. www.asatej.net

…yahoo.com/p-resv-cars-mad-madrid_spain

go to MadridMan.com, search, you can find a lot of personal reviews and recommendations for Spain. (The web-site deals with all of Spain, not just Madrid.)

ENJOY YOUR STAY!

You will find the distances considerable and taxis to be expensive. I too think you will need a hire car. Gibraltar is quite interesting for a day trip too, leave your car just over the border in Spain and walk in - you can get a coach trip to the top of the rock to see caves and monkeys etc. Grat fun. Have a good trip.

Hi Tobais, I have a holiday home in Estepona for 4 years now and whilst we are 5 mins drive from town centre taxis cost E 6 each way. Cheap but not if you need to take a taxi in the day and again at night.A car is a must I use Malaga Cars - very reasonable and without any excesses.Route from Airport is very easy and dual carriageway/motorway - takes 50 mins. You need a car for Ronda - very winding mountain roadsOther places of interest (not Gibraltar, unless you just want to say you have been there and seen the monkies!)Sotogrande 20 min drive - where the 'real' rich people have homes. Prince Harry and William go 'poloing' there - hugh boatsJerez - 1hr 30 mins - sherry town, old, very spannishTariff - beaches and hugh waves, lovely townUsual spots, Puerto Banus, Marbella etc.Best fun is getting a map, getting lost and ending up somewhere you have not planned on being.Have fun.anne

Hello Anne, Congratulations to you!

This is the best advice that I have seen on any forum.

It is the only way to really have fun, see the country and learn about the people. They are always so helpfull and friendly.

I am so glad that we share the same point of view.

May you continue to enjoy all your travels. to anywhere!

Sorry abou the typos. Is visiting Gibraltar by taxi from Estepona realistic? Otherwise there may be day trips.

Cheers, Penny.

Hi Penny, you can do Gibraltar from Estepona in two ways:

Take the bus from Estepona bus station to La Linea which is just over the border from Gibraltar. The border is about 10 minutes walk from the bus station. On the other side of the border you can take a taxi or a bus into Gib (or walk, it is fun crossing the runway on foot, that is about another 20 minutes on foot to the bottom of Main Street)

The other way of doing it is to go into any local travel agent in Estepona the day before you want to go and book and pay for a tour bus. Basically the tour bus stops all the way down the coast at set times picking up passengers. At the border going in and coming out you still have to get off the bus and go through immigration on foot. The bus then parks inside Gib and you do your own thing for the rest of the day until departure.

Because you are so close anyway to Gib the first method should work out more economical!

Any taxi driver will take you on a trip around Gib once you are in, there is a set price for the tour and there are also tour companies in Gib who will take you around. The cable car is at the top of Main Street. The monkeys are half way up the Rock! Whisky is very cheap! The museum is worth checking up, you get a film and can put your feet up. Have a coffee in Sacarellos, the rest of Gib always does. Buy your English paper for the day in Gib, it is a fraction of the price in Spain.

Have fun!

Use the buses, or a train and coach trip to Ronda, the buses are really cheap and not too bad once you get used to the times.
