short-term cell phone in Dresden to call US?

I will be spending a week in Dresden and would like to be able to call home to the US. My current US cell phone cannot be used internationally and I am not ready to upgrade my current (non-smart) phone here.

Would my best bet be to purchase an inexpensive cell phone once arriving in Germany? I've been investigating rental services for international phones here in the US (example: OneSimCard.com) but the charges are extravagant, especially since I will now need expedited shipping (leaving this Friday).

I will be arriving in Dresden on Saturday. Are there local shops that can help me?

(note: I will have an older iPod touch with me that I can use for text messaging over Wi-Fi....is there an abundance of free WiFi around Dresden?) Will also post this question in the Dresden-specific forum.

Thanks so much!

I wouldn't say there's an abundance of free Wi-Fi in Dresden, but there are certainly some cafes in town where you can use it. Best is probably Starbucks at Prager Straße (pedestrian/shopping zone) in a corner of Centrum Galerie shopping mall. Another Starbucks is at Altmarkt square.

No idea about cell phones and SIM cards for calling the U.S., sorry.
