wine region

Are there any wine tours or wineries one can visit along the Elbe River wine region between Dresden and Meissen?

If so, what would be the best way to visit? We will not have a car or bike so will depend pretty much on public transportation.

Absolutely, there is a very pretty wine region just around Meissen. It is not huge but still makes for a nice visit.

The best options are Radebeul, Meißen and Diesbar-Seußlitz. The latter is probably too far away and it takes too long to get there, unfortunately, as this is a very nice village with a beautiful Baroque manor, church and park, the vineyards aside, very much off the beaten path also.

In Radebeul, which is closest to Dresden and easily accessible by public transportation (tram #4, commuter train S1, short walks max. 10 minutes to the wineries), you can basically choose between several smaller wineries and two bigger ones:

- Schloss Wackerbarth, the state winery, beautiful property with wine and (German) champagne (Sekt) production, tours and tastings offered daily several times. See www.schloss-wackerbarth.de

- Schloss Hofloessnitz, owned by the municipality Radebeul, a small Renaissance castle with museum, restaurant and tours/tastings. Better make an appointment for tasting per email. Organic wines!

smaller ones:

- at the foot of the vineyards, just above Schloss Hofloessnitz, is a wine restaurant that has 40 regional wines per glass. Their own vineyard is right there, too. Tastings offered from 1 person on, price 10 Euro for 5 wines, for each additional wine +2 Euro per person. Website:

www.goldenerwagen.de/weinverkostung.html

- A few minutes away is winery Friedrich Aust (http://www.weingut-aust.de/) with restaurant, shop, where you can taste some wines - better make an appointment per email in advance.

In addition, there are several wine festivals in the region on weekends in fall. E.g. this one: http://www.weinfest-radebeul.de/ or in Meißen the same weekend. The last weekend of August is "Day of the open wineries" - perfect for strolling from one winery to the next one and try some wines.

Another idea: In Dresden's old town, in a small alley behind the Frauenkirche, is this wine shop: saechsische-vinothek.de/frauenkirche-dresden/ They have almost all Saxon wines, some are always open for tasting. They also organise wine tastings in Radebeul, even walking tours with tastings included. Either choose a date from their schedule or send them en email an ask for an individual offer.

Thank you for the quick responses. It sounds like I'll have many choices.

Unfortunately, the links are in German and no way to translate to English but I'll continue with my research and come up with a plan. Thanks again.
