scenic route from Dresden to Weimar?

Hi, in early June my husband, son and I will be driving from Dresden to Weimar and have a full day to explore during the drive. Can you recommend a scenic route for us to take? Also, where do you recommend that we stop along the way?

We like to walk around old city centers, and we'd also love a lunch stop recommendation. So far, based on my research, Meissen looks interesting. If we go there will it be easy to find parking in the city center?

thanks for your help! Jana, North Carolina/USA

Meissen, which looks a bit like Prague in small, is quite beautiful and shouldn't be missed. Parking is easy, there is a long parking area directly on the river and close to the old town.

The direct route from Dresden to Weimar isn't scenic, and apart from Freiberg, a medieval miners town and once the richest town of Saxony, doesn't offer any interesting old towns. But many castles. The most beautiful one is Kriebstein:

Augustusburg, a hunting castle:

And Rochlitz, Mildenstein, Lichtenwalde, Rochsburg, Gnandstein, Altenburg and Colditz (famous POW camp)

I think you underestimate driving distances. If you visit Meissen first that will take you a couple of hours (you could easily spend a full day there). Definitely head to Weimar right after late lunch in Meissen - there might be thick traffic, even traffic jams on the motorway A4. You won't be in Weimar earlier than 4 or, more likely, 5 pm.
