shopping and christmas markets

Hello looking for advice, we have travelled to Frankfurt for the last two years to Xmas markets. This year we would like to try Mainz. We also like shopping c&a, rossman, promod, nanu nana. Are there many shopping streets in Mainz or shopping arcades. We also thought of getting train to Wiesbaden one day to lilien carre shopping centre. Any info appreciated. Catherine

Mainz has a very vibrant tangle of pedestrians-only shopping zones and a fun Christmas market. I would advise you to visit the Rüdesheim market as well.

We loved the Mainz and the Xmas market is right next to the Dom - plenty of great shopping nearby. Lots of other things to do there too including the Guttenberg Museum & Print shop and the Kupferberg Sekt (sparkling wine) tour.

Rudesheim is a really pretty Xmas market - touristy - but hey, we were tourists - go earlier in the day because it gets really crowded from dark onwards. We went on a special Rhine Xmas cruise - about 2hrs - left about 3.30pm (from memory) and then back to the markets. I don't know when they run but we were there on Dec 23rd last year.

Frankfurt has a lovely Xmas market as well, and isn't too far from Mainz. You can take the train.

Depending on when you are here, visit the Christmas market in Idstein, it is one of my favorites.

I like the market in Mainz better than Wiesbaden, but if you do go to Wiesbaden, go after dark.

Can we take a train from Mainz to Rudesheim? Is there a bus? How long will it take to get there? We'd like to go there in the evening.

It take about an hour by train. see www.bahn.de (click on the flag at the top to change to english)

We loved the Rudeshiem markets - go in the afternoon so you can see what's there - they get very busy after dark
