I've al but given up with Airbnb. By the time you add the cleaning fee and airbnb's fees it is often more expensive than some apartments on the other big booking sites.
We had a fantastic week in Mainz in January and stayed at Ferienwohnungen im Osteiner Hof - booked through booking.com and it was gorgeous. Sensational location too.
Whether Airbnb adds up to be quite expensive depends on the length-of-stay as well. For shorter stays, the cleaning fee and service fee add up to be more significant.
Also, note that if you look hard enough, you might find Airbnb places listed on other sites, sometimes for less.
