Where to stay Rhine Valley?

We are flying into Frankfurt 21 September and at some point we plan on getting the train to Cologne but we would like to spend 2 nights somewhere very scenic along the Rhine Valley, can anybody recommend any places accessible by train that has maybe a quaint little town and stunning views of the valley or that is a great base to visit numerous places in the area?

You arrive on a Saturday - there are wine fests every weekend so I suggest you reserve immediately. St. Goarshausen and Oberwesel are the fest locations that weekend, but the entire valley will be fairly busy.

Trains serve all the villages on both sides of the river. Bacharach, Oberwesel, St. Goar, and Boppard are all great choices on the west bank. Be cautious about location - some inns are listed in Oberwesel, for example, but they're in Oberwesel-Dellhofen or Oberwesel-Engehöll, suburbs that would make getting around by train inconvenient. Same thing with the other towns- Boppard has several suburbs too. The suburb of Boppard-Bad Salzig is unusual in that it's a suburb that actually has its own station.

You can reach Cologne from any town in the valley; there are some direct trains, but usually, you change trains in Koblenz for such a trip.

Plan on seeing fireworks in St. Goarshausen on Saturday night.

All places in the Middle Rhine valley are easily acessible by train from both Frankfurt and Cologne. On the left bank, Bacharach, Oberwesel, St. Goar and Boppard are only a few minutes from each other, so any of these could serve as a base. Monday to Friday, there are direct local RE trains from Frankfurt and Frankfurt airport to Koblenz, stopping at Oberwesel and Boppard on the way.

Thanks for the advice. I wasn't aware there was a festival. Do you think it will be pretty difficult to find accommodation with it being the festival? Does the festival have a name so I can research it?

Thanks you we think maybe find accommodation at boppard or somewhere nearby and explore from there! It seems pretty straight forward getting there by train from the airport and then on to cologne! Thanks!
