Rhine cruises suspended due to low water

K-D has suspended all cruises on the Rhine between Cologne and Mainz until further notice. Reason: low water.

Bingen-Rüdesheimer is still sailing once a day but doesn't dock in Niederheimbach, Oberwesel, St. Goarshausen and Trechtingshausen.

Yeah, there has been no significant rain since April in Germany. Rather unusual. Good for us who loves warm weather and sunshine, but bad for cruises

Important to know for those who are in the area. Thank you Oli.

Looks like, in the northern part, Bonner Personenschifffahrt are still operating, although they do not access all landings. But the cruises, for example, between Bonn and Linz are running: https://www.bonnschiff.de/en

Good article in the New York Times about the dramatic situation for the shipping business on the Rhine: https:/…rhine-drought-water-level.html

Visitors with upcoming plans for the MIddle Rhine Valley should not be deterred just because of this circumstance. The regularly-scheduled KD Rhine cruises between Rüdesheim and Boppard ended for the season on October 21 anyway. Only the tentative winter schedule (one boat per day, sails only if there are enough cruisers on hand) is normally in place at this time of year. Visitors can still get around by train to visit the riverfront towns and see the sights that are still open (like Marksburg Castle in Braubach, open year-round.)

It is actually all the more interesting now. How many times can you write home that you actually walked on the Rhine‘s riverbed?
