Travel from Cologne to Munich

We want to travel from Cologne to Munich by Train and want to take a full day so we can perhaps get off and see some sights on the Rhine. Can someone suggest best stops for this and is there a ticket that enables you to get on and off the train over the day -or do you have to buy tickets point to point.

You have to take slower trains that go via Koblenz - most direct trains from Cologne to Munich run over the high-speed line west of the Rhine. You can get off in Koblenz, take a regional train towards Mainz and get off in Bacharach, St. Goar and all the other tourist towns on the Rhine. Any normal (full price) ticket allows you to do whatever stopovers you want within the validity period (48 h I think)

If you buy a standard fare ticket from Cologne to Munich such a ticket is valid for 2 days and allows stopovers en route. For the route through the Middle Rhine Valley you have to buy a ticket via Koblenz. You can however only use trains of the same or a lower category your ticket is good for. A (ICE) -> B (IC/EC) -> C (regional trains, e.g. RB, RE, MRB).
