You can go across the Rhine to Mainz, I would suggest a quick jaunt up the Rhine to Rüdesheim as well. Both are nice daytrips!

Stuttgart ( www.stuttgart-tourist.de ) is about 1:45 from Wiesbaden by ICE train if you would like to attend the world's second largest beer festival, the Cannstatter Volksfest ( www.cannstatter-volksfest.de ), from 26Sept to 12Oct.

Otherwise, the already mentioned stretch of the Rhine River between Mainz and Koblenz would be good.

some ticket suggestions

Greater Frankfurt Region (e.g. Frankfurt, Mainz, Rheingau, Marburg)

RMV tickets

rmv.de/coremedia/…SPRACH__ART__en.html

RMV railroad network

rmv.de/coremedia/…image.gif

RMV tickets cover all local public transport: regional trains, S-Bahn, U-Bahn (Frankfurt only), trams and buses.

Rhineland-Palatinate Ticket (RPT)

e.g. to the Middle Rhine Valley, Speyer

A day ticket covering all local public transport in the state Rhineland-Palatinate. And a bit beyond (e.g. the trains to/from Wiesbaden which is in Hesse (actually the state capital city)).

map showing where the RPT is valid

der-takt.de/fileadmin/…karte_rp_ticket.html

Rhineland-Palatinate Ticket Single (1 person) EUR 18,00

Rhineland-Palatinate Ticket (2-5 persons) EUR 26,00

Validity

Mo-Fr from 9am till 3am next day

Sa,Su from midnight till 3am next day

Freizeit-Ticket Wiesbaden/Mainz-Köln EUR 39,00

a one day return ticket from Wiesbaden to Cologne

bahn.de/p/…koeln_mainz.shtml

Only valid for the direct ICE trains! Consider also direct ICE trains between Mainz and Cologne which are a bit more frequent. This offer is always available (unlike other specials which you often have to book well in advance).

DB timetable

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

shortcuts you may use

Wi = Wiesbaden Hbf

FRA = Frankfurt Airport

select as means of transport "only local transport" if you plan trips with RMV tickets or the Rhineland-Palatinate Ticket.

DB timetable gives you connections by all means of public transport in Germany. To any address in Germany. It covers even exotic things, like the ferry between Rüdesheim and Bingen.
