Train tickets

My husband and I are planning a 12 days trip to Germany in May, we both are senior ,We need some help to find the most economic way to travel by train, the following is our itinerary :

Day 1 Depart from Frankfurt airport to Bacharach ,stay for 3 nights.

Day 2. Cruise to St Goar

Day 3 day trip to Cochem, stop at Berg Eltz

Day 4 Train to Bamberg, stop at Wurzburg, stay at Bamberg for 2 nights

Day 6 Train to Garmish-partenkirshen,stay for 2 nights

Day 8. Bus to Fussen stay for 2 nights.

Day 10 Train to Munich, stay there for 2 nights, side trip to Salzburg. (we had been in Munich before )

Day 12 Fly home from Munich.

Any advice that we should get a point to point ticket / rail pass or Bayern tickets ?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

1st day: stick to regional trains (i.e. without IC trains) as there are not many long distance trains to Bacharach anyway. The RMV - ticket is 11,20€ p.p. and you can buy it from the RMV ticket automats on the spot: http://www.rmv.de/en/ start point Frankfurt Flughafen Regionalbahnhof, destination Bacharach Bf

3rd day: buy a Rheinland - Pfalz - Ticket for 2 persons at 27€, from the DB - automat on the spot no reservation required

4th day: think about a saver ticket, where you stick to a certain train connection and with limited refund options from 25€ p.p. : http://www.bahn.com/i/view/USA/en/index.shtml

With the "further search options" you can include a stopover in Würzburg in your journey

start: Bacharach destination Bamberg, note only for the leg in the long distance trains you choose a certain train.

5th day: http://www.bahn.com/i/view/USA/en/index.shtml start Bamberg destination Garmisch - Partenkirchen from 30€ p.p.

6th day: you can buy the bus ticket on the spot.

day 10: for the side trip to Salzburg opt for the bayernticket which is unfortunately only valid in regional trains at 27€

Holger

From Garmisch to Fuessen you might want to consider a combination of train and bus, which goes though spectacular Alpine scenery. This route takes the train from Garmisch to Reutte, Austria. Then you switch to a bus in Reutte and go on to Fuessen. It takes about the same time as the bus from Garmisch to Fuessen and the train part is covered by a Bayern ticket. (Yes, it's in Austria, but it's still covered.) The bus from Reutte to Fuessen is not expensive at all.

Also if you're going to Neuschwanstein, you should reserve your tour tickets on-line ahead of time.
