Traveling from Frankfurt, Germany to St Goar

We are traveling from Frankfurt to St Goar on Sept 13.

We are a party of three adults. We would like to complete the trip in two or three hours so we have time to look around before leaving for Koln the next day.

What are our options?

Is there a train direct from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof to St Goar?

Are there any bus lines from Frankfut to St Goar?

Is there a sightseeing boat that makes the trip?

Thanks, Bob from Buffalo

You'll be using the train, or the train + a cruise boat. You'll need to change trains either way.

Are you traveling from Frankfurt's main station or from Frankfurt airport? What time of day do you expect to set out for St. Goar?

If coming from Frankfurt's main station, and you're averse to changing trains, you CAN take a direct train to St. Goarshausen, just across the river from St. Goar, then ferry across; it is also possible to get a direct train to other towns south of St. Goarshausen (like Rüdesheim) and cruise north to St. Goar from there.

Please advise on the starting point, the time and your preferences.

Thank you for your prompt reply. We will be leaving Frankfurt for St Goar at about 10AM. I think that the option that works best for us is traveling from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof to St Goarhausen, and then crossing the river by ferry.

PS Can you give us any insights on the best way to travel from St Goar on to Koln.

There are direct local trains to St. G'hausen at 9:53 and 10:53 - takes about 1:40 altogether.

Are you heading on to Köln on the same day? If so, you may want to leave bags with the TI office in St. Goar - there are no lockers at the station. You can look at schedules at the DB website:

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

Are you planning to buy individual tickets, or use railpasses? If you're doing Frankfurt-St. Goar-Köln all in one day and need tickets it will probably be best to buy advance-sale, savings fare, point-to-point tickets and schedule a stopover in St. Goarshausen. You can get one ticket for 3 adults for as little as 39€ total (regular fare would be about 100€ more!) These tickets go on sale 92 days in advance of your travel date. Buy them at the DB site when they're first available to make sure you get the lowest price.

have you had a play with the German rail site www.bahn.de ?? change to english at the top (click the flag) - it may take a while to get your head round some of the terms but once you do it's an easy site to navigate. You can expand each journey option to get maps and times and intermediate stops etc.

You are still outside the 92 day advance purchase time frame but try doing some dummy bookings for a date 90 days from now and making comparisons on prices etc. These 'specials' tickets are only for a set train (just like an airline ticket) but if you know your exact dates they are fantastic value. We recently did 6 weeks in Germany all by train - a wonderful way to see the country as well as being reliable, warm (in January) and comfortable.

Rudesheim is pretty touristy but it's a really lovely little town. Oberwesel (same side as St Goar) is lovely too and has a medieval wall you can walk along the top of - lots of fun

cheers

We are staying over at St Goar for one night & leaving the next day. I assume that this means that we can't buy tickets from Frankfurt to Koln and simply stop off at St Goarhaussen/St Goar for a brief visit to save money. Under the circumstances. is it still a possibility to buy the three tickets 92 days in advance to get better ticket prices.

I'm not sure of that Bob, but have a play with the bahn website - there are options for adding a stop over (eg Frankfurt to Cologne via St Goarhaussen) and I suppose if you put in 24hrs it will tell you if that is possible.

Why is it always a mystery. Look at the train schedule.
